The author of "Moby Dick"Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891) was one of the greatest novelists, essayists, and poets in 19th century America, on par with Nathaniel Hawthorne. Melville did not receive the attention he deserved during his lifetime and rose to fame in the 1920s, widely regarded as one of the pinnacle figures of American literature.
British writer Maugham believes that his novel Moby Dick is one of the top ten literary masterpieces in the world, and its literary history ranks higher than that of Mark Twain and others. Melville is also known as the "Shakespeare" of America.
